Description

Located to the north of the town of Portimao the Alamos Golf Course is the newer sister course to the Morgado. Its playing length is about 800 metres shorter than its bigger sister but it is considered by many players as more of a challenge to play. Craftily placed trees and plenty of deep bunkers with fast greens and different levels of putting. These are just three of the main factors that golfers will have to consider to end their round with a pleasing scorecard. This course attracts many regular returning visitors. One of the many joys of this golf course as it winds up through the countryside is that the golfer will be presented with many attractive views, especially to the distant Monchique range of mountains. On one large green players have been seen to interrupt their play to enjoy a lunchtime picnic and the vista!

Open country.

Alamos was a welcome change from some of the other Algarve courses which can feel rather enclosed by villas and development. Not a villa in sight here, it's beautiful open country all around with plenty of wildlife. I spotted flocks of flamingos and storks and even bee-eaters here. Oh and I was there to play golf too! It's excellent condition and the greens are particularly good, all interesting shapes and slopes. Arriving there is the biggest challenge! Alamos isn't signposted - aim for Morgardo because they share the same clubhouse (we didn't know). On entering the estate you go through a security gate and think you're there. But there is 4.5km over cobbled road, past half built and derelict hotels to negotiate first. The clubhouse was almost empty, all very strange. But It's a very nice course overall, good value and we'll be going back next time.
Disappointing condition of a good course.

I have always been a fan of both Morgado and Alamos courses particularly the back nine on the former and the front nine on the latter. However I was disappointed on this visit in the condition of the course. The greens were slow and there was little definition between fairway and rough. Of greater concern was the amount of long coarse grass on the approaches and surrounds to the greens which made it look scruffy. I didn't understand why these areas hadn't been treated with a product like Rescue to kill off the invasive species. I am sure it just needs some care and attention to bring it back to normal.
