Description

The San Lorenzo is generally acknowledged as being originally the most popular golf course in the Algarve for its scenery and having some of the most attractive holes then to be found. The undulating fairways and several doglegs are composed of two virtually separate nine holes with only the eighth being in contact with the back nine. It is on the eighth hole that the escorting pine trees will give way on one side of the fairway to a charming lake. The round will be finishing on the other side of this lake with a par 4 eighteenth hole that presents to most players a magnificent golfing challenge.

Reputation maintained

I was given trusted advice to play from experienced Algarve golfer. Recently played San Lorenzo on Easter Sunday early morning. The drive to the course sets the scene of what this place is about; money, class and style. Played course of white tee and I play off 4 handicap. I really enjoyed the variety and style of each hole. Each hole different and require different strategy and shot type. A course you can play different strategy where I played aggressive, you could equally plot yourself around leaving longer second shots. Greens were very good and rolled well and receptive. Course was fair and errant shots were punished fairly. Not 5 stars? I have voted for 4 stars as I feel the price is high where reputation has maintained its stature. Signs of some disease damage and greens were not wiped of dew. Tee boxes were bit sloppy and grass not cut. Definitely worth playing if happy to spend top money.
One of the best I’ve Played

Frankly, I was amazed to read some of the reviews of this course from the last 12 months. I’ve played a lot of golf courses all around the world and I play to a single figure handicap; this course is possibly my favourite that I’ve ever come across. It tests every aspect of your game: long holes needing course management, short target holes, well placed traps and very impressively a few holes in links setup. The greens were in better condition than Quinta do Lago and the Old Course, and the fairways were a little bare in places, but by-enlarge were like carpets. It was well run by friendly staff, and the only small gripe I had is that it was €4 for 24 balls on the range. Honestly, an incredible test of golf and a beautiful setup.
