Description

The Year 1966 was when the Penina Championship course was inaugurated by its architect, the late Sir Henry Cotton, a three times British Open Champion. The fairways were originally occupied by rice paddy fields and hundreds of trees and bushes had to be planted to line the fairways. The contours of the each are flat and they are strategically traversed with streams and ditches with the occasional water hazard. It is said that that Sir Henry designed all the hazards deliberately to catch the lower handicap players. There is several doglegs on both section of the course but only one par 5 in the first nine holes, whilst the remaining four being in the back nine. Enjoy the par three 13th hole challenge as one in five players find the lake and some others will find the guarding bunkers. The final 18th hole has a raised sloping two-tiered green surrounded with bunkers and will also demand confident putting.

Reviews

1st time playing Penina Championship.

Josephine from Portugal
Pretty course and well landscaped. Mature course with trees that can provide shelter yet a pain if your balls land anywhere below the trees. Bad experience was we started at hole 10 as it was a busy day and after hole 18, we went to hole 1. When we got there, a lady came up and said to us “You play fast? Did you book?”. She was quite obnoxious and I said this was our 2nd 9. I also said if you play fast, you can go ahead as this is our first time playing here. She mumbled something and her husband said is better we proceed as they are walking and we have a buggy.
Not the best of days.

Alan from United Kingdom
Bit wet to really appreciate the course, the greens looked good however not swept of water, many par 3s same length, overall lovely walk and sure course has seen better days,. Real issue is paying 150 pair and the being asked for handicaps ( we were 6 &11) paired with another couple who struggled to often get off the tee., very slow and extremely frustrating. More care needed by course when taking bookings and matching pairs, get the impression it’s grab the money and who cares about the enjoyment.
